INS Delhi Commissioned. A Complete Overview

INS Delhi is one of the most iconic guided missile destroyers of the Indian Navy. It carries the pennant number D61 and belongs to the Delhi class. The ship was commissioned on 15 November 1997 at Mumbai. It marked a significant milestone in India’s naval history, as it demonstrated that the country could design and build its own large and powerful warships.

The commissioning ceremony introduced INS Delhi as the lead vessel of its class. It was a significant achievement for Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the Indian Navy and the country’s defence research community. The INS Delhi continues to serve as a frontline warship to this day.

History of INS Delhi

The Delhi class was planned at a time when India sought to reduce its external dependence for naval ships. For decades, India had imported destroyers and relied on foreign technology. The goal was to create a modern destroyer using Indian design, systems integration and engineering skills.

The development of INS Delhi involved long years of planning and testing. Indian designers collaborated with naval officers and defence scientists to design the ship’s structure, layout, and combat systems. The aim was to create a versatile destroyer capable of operating in high-threat zones.

INS Delhi was the first ship of the class and paved the way for further indigenous warship development. It helped India gain confidence in building large naval platforms. The destroyer has undergone multiple upgrades to meet modern operational demands.

Design and Structure of INS Delhi

INS Delhi has a strong and impressive design. Its structure reflects power, stability and endurance.

1. Large Dimensions

INS Delhi is around 163 metres long. It has a beam of about 17 metres, which gives it balance in rough seas. Its displacement is more than 6,700 tonnes. This makes it one of the largest surface ships built in India at the time of commissioning.

2. Gas Turbine Propulsion

The ship is powered by gas turbine engines. These engines allow the ship to reach high speeds. They also help INS Delhi cover long distances without difficulty.

3. Steel Hull and Superstructure

The hull is built with high strength steel. This provides durability and protection. The superstructure is designed to reduce radar reflections. This gives the ship a lower radar signature.

4. Space for Weapons and Helicopters

The design supports missiles, guns, radars, torpedoes and electronic warfare systems. The ship can also carry a naval helicopter. The helicopter increases the ship’s range and surveillance capability.

The design of INS Delhi balances firepower, speed and operational flexibility.

Key Features of INS Delhi

INS Delhi is known for its advanced systems and strong performance across different combat roles.

1. Multi Role Combat Ability

The ship can handle surface warfare, air defence and anti-submarine operations. This makes it suitable for fleet protection and independent missions.

2. Modern Combat Information Centre

The ship has a dedicated centre for analysing real time information. This allows the crew to make fast decisions during missions.

3. Long Range Operations

INS Delhi can travel far from the shore and remain deployed for long periods. This helps the Navy maintain presence in distant waters.

4. Strong Survivability

The ship is built to withstand battle conditions. It has systems that reduce damage from fire, flooding or attack.

5. Accommodation for Large Crew

The destroyer carries officers, sailors and operational teams. They work across navigation, weapons, engineering and communications.

These features allow INS Delhi to operate successfully in complex maritime situations.

Weapons and Systems on INS Delhi

INS Delhi carries a potent mix of weapons and sensors. These systems allow the ship to engage different types of threats.

1. Surface-to-Surface Missiles

These missiles allow the ship to strike enemy ships at long distances. They help India protect sea lanes and maintain deterrence.

2. Surface-to-Air Missiles

Air defence missiles protect the ship from aircraft and incoming threats. This is vital during fleet operations.

3. Naval Guns

INS Delhi is equipped with medium-calibre guns for surface combat. It also has rapid-firing guns for close-range protection.

4. Anti-Submarine Weapons

The ship carries torpedoes and rocket launchers. Sonar systems support these to detect submarines below the surface.

5. Radars and Sonar

INS Delhi is equipped with long-range radars that track aircraft and surface ships. Its sonar systems help detect submarines and underwater movement.

6. Electronic Warfare Suite

This includes jammers, decoys and sensors. These tools protect the ship from guided threats and assist in early detection.

7. Helicopter Facility

The ship can operate a multi-role naval helicopter. The helicopter supports search and rescue, anti-submarine missions, and surveillance.

The weapons and systems on INS Delhi make it one of the most capable destroyers in its class.

Operational Role of INS Delhi

INS Delhi plays many roles in India’s maritime strategy. Its versatility makes it essential to the Indian Navy.

1. Fleet Escort and Protection

INS Delhi protects high value naval assets. This includes aircraft carriers, supply ships and amphibious vessels.

2. Patrol and Surveillance

The destroyer patrols critical sea routes. It monitors movement and ensures maritime security.

3. Joint Naval Exercises

INS Delhi participates in exercises with friendly navies. These exercises improve cooperation and tactical capability.

4. Anti-Piracy Operations

The ship can join international missions to deter piracy. It helps protect merchant ships and trade routes.

5. Humanitarian and Relief Operations

INS Delhi can support rescue missions, evacuations and aid during disasters.

6. Strategic Deterrence

Its presence in sensitive regions strengthens India’s deterrence posture.

These roles show how important INS Delhi is for India’s maritime readiness.

INS Delhi and India’s Naval Expansion

INS Delhi was a foundation stone in India’s journey towards building modern warships. It helped develop skills that supported the design of the Kolkata-class and Visakhapatnam-class destroyers later.

The Delhi class created confidence in India’s naval industry. It also encouraged cooperation between designers, engineers, shipyards and naval teams.

Today, INS Delhi stands as a symbol of India’s progress in defence technology.
