Introduction

When terror strikes, India’s first and finest responders are the commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG) — the men in black who move silently, strike decisively, and restore calm amid chaos.

Formed to safeguard the nation from modern threats, the NSG embodies discipline, courage, and precision. On NSG Raising Day 2025, udChalo proudly joins the nation in saluting these silent protectors who risk their lives so millions can live in peace.

History and Formation of the NSG

The National Security Guard was established on 16 October 1984 under the National Security Guard Act, following two defining moments — Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These incidents exposed the need for a highly trained, quick-reaction force capable of handling terrorism, hijacking, and hostage situations.

Modelled on the SAS (UK) and GSG-9 (Germany), the NSG was designed as a Federal Contingency Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It operates under dual control — the MHA for policy and administrative oversight, and the Indian Army for operational command and training.

Its motto, “Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha” — Omnipresent, Ultimate Security — captures its commitment to safeguarding India with excellence and integrity.

Initially headquartered in New Delhi, the NSG now operates from a sprawling 35-acre campus in Manesar, Haryana, with regional hubs in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Gandhinagar to ensure rapid deployment across the country.

Structure and Composition

The NSG is primarily composed of two specialist groups:

  1. Special Action Group (SAG): Drawn from the Indian Army, this wing handles combat operations such as counter-terrorism and hostage rescue.
  2. Special Ranger Group (SRG): Comprising personnel from Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), this unit focuses on VIP security, perimeter defence, and support operations.

Together, they operate as one of the most efficient counter-terror task forces in the world. The organisation is headed by a Director General (DG) from the Indian Police Service, supported by officers from the Army and paramilitary services.

Training and Selection: Forged Through Fire

Joining the NSG is no ordinary feat. Only a small fraction of those who volunteer successfully complete the gruelling training process. Candidates undergo rigorous physical, psychological, and tactical evaluations — with a dropout rate exceeding 70%.

Training Highlights:

  • 90-day probation focusing on endurance, marksmanship, and decision-making under stress.
  • Live-fire combat simulations to improve reaction time and teamwork.
  • Specialised modules in urban warfare, close-quarter battle (CQB), bomb disposal, and intelligence coordination.
  • Foreign collaboration training with global elite units such as the SAS and the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team.
  • Zero-error tolerance culture — commandos train to neutralise threats within seconds without collateral damage.

Every commando earns the right to wear the iconic black uniform and cat insignia, symbolising stealth, alertness, and strength — giving them the nickname “Black Cats.”

Major Operations and Missions

Over the decades, the NSG has been at the forefront of India’s most critical security operations. Their precision, planning, and bravery have saved countless lives.

Notable Missions:

  1. Operation Black Thunder (1988): Neutralised militants in Amritsar’s Golden Temple with minimum casualties.
  2. 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks (2008): Conducted a 60-hour operation across multiple sites, rescuing hostages and eliminating terrorists.
  3. Akshardham Temple Attack (2002): Cleared the temple complex in Gandhinagar, saving civilians during a high-risk mission.
  4. Pathankot Airbase Attack (2016): Prevented further loss of life by swiftly neutralising infiltrating militants.
  5. Operation Vajra Shakti (Parliament Attack, 2001): Secured the Indian Parliament complex and restored order.

These operations highlight NSG’s ability to act decisively under extreme conditions — balancing force with precision.

Lesser-Known Facts About NSG

  1. Only volunteers serve: Every NSG commando is a volunteer, often with 5–7 years of prior experience in the Army or CAPFs.
  2. Extremely selective: Out of hundreds of applicants, only a few dozen make it past training each year.
  3. Dedicated K-9 units: NSG dogs are trained in explosive detection and casualty rescue operations.
  4. Zero casualties in training missions: Their safety protocols are among the best globally.
  5. High-tech equipment: Commandos use advanced Israeli Tavor rifles, MP5 sub-machine guns, and state-of-the-art communication systems.
  6. Role in global events: NSG teams protect international summits, including the G20 and SAARC meetings.
  7. Rapid Response Time: Deployed anywhere in India within 2–6 hours via dedicated air transport.
  8. International reputation: NSG training academies have hosted participants from friendly foreign nations.

The NSG Ethos: Courage, Discipline, and Service

The NSG spirit lies in three core values — Courage, Commitment, and Competence.
Their training philosophy is based on teamwork and self-sacrifice, where every operation is meticulously planned and executed with minimal risk to civilians.

Each commando operates with unwavering discipline and emotional control, reflecting the highest standards of soldiering. For many defence families, the NSG represents the ultimate embodiment of duty and patriotism.

“To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal.”

For defence families and aspirants, the NSG stands as a living symbol of India’s strength and integrity.
